We paid a visit to Vaynol Old Hall, the private chapel and the surrounding gardens. As you enter the hall you cannot help but notice the busy atmosphere. Strange, as it stands completely empty! The gardens and the private chapel also exude an air of acceptance and solitude. One feels as though ones interrupted private moments from long ago.
By 1665, whilst the Great Plague was sweeping across Britain, the Vaynol Estate covered 23,000 acres. For centuries the Williams family, The Crown, and The Asshton Smiths, privately owned the estate. It remains privately owned and boasts of 50 listed structures and 1000 acres of parkland, enclosed by a five-mile long stone wall.
We have access to Vaynol Old Hall, The Private Chapel, The Great Barn and the grounds. The buildings stand as a monument to Tudor, 16th and early 17th century architecture and design. The history of these buildings and the people that lived in them are waiting to be unravelled!
Our psychic asks:
* Who is the lady in black that gazes longingly across at the chapel? * Why does the child spirit tease and push people on the cellar steps? * Does the coffin in the ground floor room hold the master of the house? * Does the lady on the staircase fear for her life? * Do the unearthed bones belong to her? * Does the spirit of the gardener still tend the garden?
We need answers to all these questions and more. Join us to investigate. The faint hearted need not attend!
Vaynol Park is the remnant of what was known as The Vaynol Estate. At its height this estate covered more than 38 thousand acres of land that stretched from the Menai Straits, Snowdonia, to the Lleyn Peninsular and the Conwy Valley. Fifty listed structures and one thousand acres of parkland are all that is left following auction during the 1960’s. The medieval period saw ownership of the estate in the hands of the Bishop of Bangor.
It was during the reign of Elizabeth 1 that Welsh gentlemen began to buy land in this area. One of these gentlemen, Thomas Wyn Ap William, known as Thomas Williams, decided on creating a private landed estate. This vision continued for the next 150 years in the hands of his descendants. During the Tudor and Stuart periods, Vaynol Old Hall and the surrounding area would have been bustling with activity.
The Private Chapel dates back to before 1596, which was the time that William Williams and his first wife Elin added the porch. The Great Barn was erected during 1605, at a time when William Williams had married his second wife, Dorothy. During 1622 William Williams was created a Baronet by King James 1. The family had become extremely wealthy and powerful. Another Sir William was very involved with the civil war. He changed sides twice, presumably to look after the interests of the estate, as the fighting got closer. The last of the line, another Sir William, died without heirs during 1696 and bequeathed the estate to an English family called Wrey of Tawstock in Devon.
A later period witnessed the estate moving into the hands of the crown and it was King William 111 that decided it should be given to a family named Assheton Smith. The Assheton Smith family lived in the Old Hall from 1756-1793, when they commissioned a New Hall that today still stands in all its glory. This family remained in possession of the estate until 1980, when death duties forced the sale of Vaynol Park to Glan Gwna Estates Ltd.
