We visited the Inn and were immediately struck by its turbulent atmosphere!
We would like you to join us in our investigations. Visit the Hell Fire Caves and investigate the Inn. We don’t feel that you’ll be disappointed! A "Strange Britain" approved haunted house; this 17th Century Coaching Inn lies in one of the strangest villages in the country.
The area remains steeped in legend and myths concerning witchcraft, devil worship and sacrifice. A glance through a bedroom window of the inn allows a glimpse of the colourful history of the surroundings and beckons you to a past that connects the Inn and The conical hill that conceals pagan worship of a bygone iron-age and the secrets of the Dashwood family!
The golden dome of the St. Lawrence church distinctly glistens whether rain or shine and points eerily to the direction of the Dashwood mausoleum and The Hellfire Caves. West Wycombe, owned by the National Trust, is steeped in legends and myths, whether it’s the Hell Fire Caves, Medmenham Abbey or the 13th Century church of St. Lawrence, the patron saint of prostitutes. The notorious Hell Fire Caves and Medmenham Abbey today, still hold the secrets of The Knights of Saint Francis, the order that used both of these to pursue their particular pleasures.
The Abbey, bought by Sir Francis Dashwood was converted into an erotic garden. It is said that the Hell-Fire club indulged in mock religious ceremonies and used masks and costumes to allow them to practice degrees of debauchery with wine, and other gentlemen's wives. The club, whose members included peers of the realm, philosophers, members of parliament and at least one American revolutionary, moved its revels to a more secluded site at The West Wycombe Caves, following interest from those that did not belong!
