Reading - City Information

Enjoy an excellent WOW Weekend in the intriguing Victorian town of Reading.

Littered with a melee of Victorian red brick housing, medieval churches and Gothic buildings, Reading Museum being a fine example, sitting happily alongside shiny high-tech glass office blocks.

The ruins of Reading Abbey, consecrated by Thomas Beckett in 1164 contain the burial place of the Abbey’s founder Henry the 1st. Beside the Abbey is Reading Prison, a place enshrined in literary history by the pen of Oscar Wilde and “The Ballad of Reading Goal”.

The retail heart of Reading is focused around Broad Street most of which is pedestrianised during working hours creating a relaxed environment to explore the numerous ‘big name’ and smaller specialized shops. The Oracle Shopping and Leisure Complex in the town centre is a vast emporium, food centre and recreation venue.

Recreation and entertainment activities are well catered for in and around the town, some of England’s most noted restaurants are on Reading’s doorstep.

There are numerous cinemas, nightclubs and bars and of course the town is globally renowned for the annual Reading Music Festival.
